The deadline for graduate admission to the Fall 2017 incoming graduate class is December 12 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Entrance Requirements

Students interested in applying for the Ph.D. degree should have an excellent undergraduate preparation in chemistry or related fields. The department requires the general GRE and STRONGLY recommends the subject GRE. The GRE scores must be submitted prior to the admission deadline. The department also requires three letters of recommendation with each application for graduate school. In addition, an official transcript with GPA must be submitted with the application. NYU requires all international applicants to provide a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score.

Prospective students are not required to contact individual faculty members as part of the application purposes. However, we strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the research interests of individual faculty members. If you are interested in particular research groups, we encourage you to list these groups in your application.

Unfortunately, the department of chemistry cannot waive the $100 application fee. Therefore, applications without this fee cannot be submitted.

Many factors influence the admission decision for graduate studies in the department of chemistry at NYU. The department has neither a minimum for either GPA requirement nor a minimum set of GRE and TOEFL scores. Decisions are based on a detailed evaluation of a student's prior education and research experience in combination with evaluations, the student's statements, and the fit of a student's research interests with those of the department's faculty. Students with prior research experience are encouraged to describe their experience and list any related peer-reviewed publications in their application, as these strengthen an application significantly.
